On Volunteer week I spoke to Anne-Marie Zaritsky who is the volunteer manager with Mencap. Anne-Marie told me all about volunteering within Mencap and how it transforms lives for both people with learning difficulties and the volunteer themselves. 
We also hear from regular caller James from  Woking who talks about his own volunteering role in a local charity shop.

Music to our ears at West Hall!

The Beautiful grounds of West Hall nursing home in West Byfleet are to be the setting for a special music festival later this month. 
Steve Morton from West Hall joined me to talk about the event and how West Hall works to bring the residents and the wider community together.
 
The West Hall music festival is a free event and is open to all on Saturday 29th June.

The Knaphill Community Fridge

Did you know in the UK we throw away almost 15 million tonnes of food and drink each year? Much of this waste can be avoided. 
 
Volunteers at Knaphill's Holy Trinity Church have come up with a great scheme to reduce food wastage in the local community  - The Community Fridge!
 
Local people are encouraged to leave any surplus food in the fridge for others to take and use. This means that food is diverted away from landfill.
 
 
The team also collect surplus food from local supermarkets and businesses to help stock the fridge.
 
The fridge is located in the grounds of Holy Trinity church in Knaphill and is open Monday to Thursday between 08.30am and 3.30pm
 
 
 
 
 

107 Years young!

During my request collecting rounds at St Peters Hospital in Chertsey  I met Phylis. Phylis was born in 1912, meaning that she is about to turn 107! What a humbling and beautiful conversation we had. You can listen again here to the audio from The Big Request Show.

Young at Heart

Lara met Avril Saunders from the Young at Heart over 55's club in West Byfleet. Avril told Lara about the club and how it benefits the community.
The club meets at Camphill Social Club in West Byfleet on a monthly basis and has an array of food and entertainment on offer to combat loneliness and encourage social interaction.
